Assessment
Critical Analysis Paper
For your first paper assignment, I will be asking you to write an essay on one of the texts we have read so far in class. Your essay should seek to develop a strong, unique argument about one or more of the text’s central themes by paying close attention to the text’s use of language, imagery, literary techniques, and formal structures.
- 20% of final grade – 4-5 pages
Research Paper
For your major project, you will write a research-based paper centered around a theme, concept, or question of your choosing. You will choose 1-2 texts from our reading and develop an argument using wider reading and secondary works rather than referring only to the literature.
- 35% of final grade – 7-8 pages
Creative Remix Project
For your final project, you will be completing a creative remix project in groups. This could include the incorporation of social media, podcasts, media articles, performing arts etc.
- 10% of final grade
Weekly Blackboard Responses
In addition to the major writing assignments, you will complete shorter writing assignments that will require you to respond to prompts about the course readings.
- 25% of final grade – 200-300 words per post
Attendance and Participation
Attending class means doing the required work (readings, Blackboard posts, drafts, peer reviews, major assignments) and attending our in-person meetings. Participating means sharing your thoughts out loud and responding to other students’ comments. Participating in our online forum means posting on Blackboard every week and responding to other students’ posts.
- 10% of final grade.
Extra credit: Relevant cultural excursion (may be online attendance) and 2-page analytical review 2%

I use a 100% grading scale to assess individual assignments and your final course grade.
